This is one of my absolutely favorite books, and for some reason, it often gets overlooked at my parties.
Well, not today, friends!
The Usborne Internet-Linked First Thousand Words in English is a fabulous book for building vocabulary in young learners (among many other things!). Check out the details from the Usborne website:
"This classic Usborne book has now been revised to include many brand new illustrations and it continues to stimulate and delight today's generation of children as it did when it was first published over 20 years ago. It provides a treasury of learning opportunities as an exciting talk-about book for the very young, a stimulating picture word book for pre-readers and a lively source of ideas and spellings for first writers. Stephen Cartwright's brilliant illustrations, with their wealth of detail and gentle humor, will give many hours of valuable entertainment and enjoyment. (Gold Award Winner, Best Pre-School Information Book, Parents Play and Learn Awards, 1996)"

I love the double-page spread! I can just picture little ones lying on the floor with their faces propped up on their hands taking in every detail of this book! And all the pages are things or places that children are likely to be familiar with or experience themselves (kitchen, country, seaside, school, home, street, market, etc.).
There's also a little yellow duck hidden on every double-page. We love finding him each time!
Many people also use this book as a game! The double-page spread becomes the game board, kids roll a die and move so many pictures around the page. Whatever object they land on, they have to find. Pretty neat! And since each time you turn the page you have a fresh, new 'game board,' it's great for long trips or waits in the doctor's office or restaurant!
This is my favorite book for Anna. We work on vocabulary, hand-eye coordination (point to the. . .), and recognizing facial expressions. For Mary, who's six, it's great for reading and spelling. I keep it in the bathroom (being real with ya here), and we have fun with it everyday! It's not a book to simply read - it's a book to explore!
(okay, yes, I know that sounded cheesy, but I really, really love this book!)
First Thousand Words in English is also frequently used and recommended by speech and language therapists!
There's also a page with seasons, temperature, days of the week, holidays, and food!
This book really has everything!
It's a tall hardback book (over 9 inches x 12 inches) with 64 pages. I would have thought this book to be at least $20, since it's so big and durable, plus it's internet-linked (click on the first picture up top to read more about that, or click here).
Nope!
It's only $12.99!
Seriously! That is such a great deal for this versatile book!

Awww, no thanks, my kids are really too old for that.
(Is that what you're thinking?)
Well, parlez-vous francais?
This same exact book is available in different languages!
We're studying French at home, so we also love the French version. Same pictures, same everything, except the words are in a different language.
In addition to English and French, we also have a Chinese and Spanish version.
These books are all internet-linked, which means you and your child can visit
to hear a native speaker pronounce each word, watch video clips, download activities, and discover many, many more fun and educational (and SAFE!) websites to explore.
Here's what the Quicklinks pages looks like for the French book:

Click on the book series, then the book...
And there you have all the goodies, including the part I circled in purple:
To hear the words in this book read by a native speaker, choose a page number then click on the arrow buttons.
That is pretty awesome!
However, this series of books does not need an internet connection to be beneficial to your child. There are TONS of pronunciation and language helps contained in the books themselves. So, no computer is required!
I could go on and on, I really could. And if you're still here, you deserve a medal. I know I get long-winded sometimes and image-heavy, but I just love sharing these amazing Usborne books with you!
Books can be life-changers, and it's similar to the 'you are what you eat' philosophy. Garbage in = garbage out. I'm determined to surround my children with quality books and activities that will spark their creativity, ignite their imaginations, and help them, by God's grace and power, to become life-long learners who will enrich the lives of others.
Hokey and sappy, sure. But, true?
Absolutely.
And Usborne books do that for my family.
And I just love to share them with you.
So, thanks for stickin' around!
