Book Look - Time Traveler

Oooh! We LOVE this book!

Time Traveler is an Usborne classic that's recently had a makeover! Here's the description from the website:

"Discover what life was really like in this action-packed adventure through history. Visit a castle during the Crusades, meet a ferocious band of Viking raiders, explore Rome when the Roman empire was at its height and take a trip down the Nile at a time when pharaohs ruled Egypt. Informative and amusing, this fully illustrated book contains four updated Usborne classics: Knights & Castles, Viking Raiders, Rome & Romans, Pharaohs & Pyramids."

Let's take a look inside!

This is a unique book in that it doesn't just transport you back in time and tell you fact after fact (boring!). You, the reader, imagine you're putting on a time travel helmet, and when you go back in time, you meet a specific family. That family takes you in and you experience life as it was in those days with that family. Its fascinating, it's fun, and it's engaging to children because the characters make it more real to them!

Aren't the illustrations awesome?!

Time to put on your time travel helmet and go back to Viking times!

The Roman section is sooo interesting, but I do want you to know that the illustrations are pretty authentic. For instance, a few naked bottoms are shown on the bath house pages. They're very small (like teeny-tiny), and there's no frontal nudity, but I do want you to know that before you buy it. Also, on the Egypt pages about the feast, the dancers are in tiny bikinis (this, thankfully, is not authentic, since I understand that the dancers back then were usually topless). Soo... just wanted you to have all the facts. For us, these are not deal-breakers; we love the book and read it at home often, discussing these issues briefly with the girls and moving on.

Let's check out some more pages!

At the end of each section, there's a double-page spread that tells the history of that time period chronologically. I love how the images break up the text into bite-sized chunks of knowledge! This makes the information less intimidating to younger readers.

Also at the end of each section is a little quiz to test for comprehension.

Time Traveler is a hardback book with 130 pages, and it's geared to 8-11 year olds, but my first-grader adores it! It's priced at 22.99, which is a great deal for this fascinating hardback book that your children will want to explore again and again!
